My Personal Favorites . . .

Over the years I have made a lot of images; roughly around 300 of them. Some of those were admittedly not that great while others were showing a clear improvement in my illustrative skills. But with each image I strove to improve my art in some way, occasionally setting aside the passion that drove me to create and focus exclusively on improving my technical skills.

So I have chosen to list my personal favorite images (in alphabetical order) and a little bit of details about each one and even the inspiration behind them.

If you wish to see a larger, complete version of any image, simply click on the image square. Each square listed below has been cropped to 300 x 300 pixels. There is no slideshow effect used so that I can encourage people to take the time to read the descriptions I wrote rather than just flip through all the images.

A Dog of War
A Dog of War
I used a lot of light and deep shadow in this one, to make the ancient warrior really pop out in the scene. His dark and stern expression makes it clear how seriously he takes his duties in the army of this ancient place. The pristine condition of his uniform, his shield, even the way he holds himself says so much. He felt it was an honor to serve his emperor.

A Moment of Peace
A Moment of Peace
One might imagine that to rule is to have so many whispering in one’s ear. To have others pleading for a moment of attention, a glance their way, and perhaps even an audience. Kings command and queens rule, but one might think that precious moment of solitude a slice of heaven in their days.
A Place of Secrets
A Place of Secrets
I’ll always be in love with mysterious, deep woodlands. These places just conjure up feelings and emotions like no other. That is the inspiration here, but the story unfolding I leave up to the viewer.

A Place to Dream
A Place to Dream
I love the mood in this image. Romantic to be sure, but the play of shadows and light add a mood of mystery. The contrast between the pink flowers and the gray stone are all part of what I like about it. Medieval times have always been a source of inspiration for me.
A Touch of Magic
A Touch of Magic
Into the deep wood once more, but this time it is something more magical. This long haired maiden has wandered far into the forest and found an old ruin. And apparently she found a little more than that. I wanted to create something magical and in a style that made it feel older somehow.

Avalon
Avalon
There are a number of images I have made over the years which were inspired by medieval times. So of course I would delve into the Arthurian legends. I always wanted to make my own vision of Avalon, the final resting place of King Arthur, according to the legend.

Dark Queen
Dark Queen
Dark, dangerous and beautiful. This queen should not be taken lightly, for she clearly commands more than a crown. Dark and powerful magic is hers to command and bend events and people to her will. Enjoyed this one so much, wonderful play with light and shadows.

Elven Witch
Elven Witch
Deep in the forest there is a boundary between the lands of humans and elves, a glade with a dark pool and stones. And one of those watching over that place is an elven witch wielding powerful magic. I loved creating this mysterious forest glade and its guardian.
Fairy Dreams
Fairy Dreams
Yes, we’re once again deep in the forest, but this time it’s night. I imagined a fairy sitting on a fairy stone surrounded by the tiny lights of will-o-wisps. I wanted to create a very lush setting for this pretty little fairy. The image turned out very close to my inner vision of it.

Heart of the Forest
Heart of the Forest
I keep finding ways to weave magical creatures into misty, deep forests. In this case, I imagined what the beating heart of a forest like this might look like. And yes, she would be sitting on a throne covered in delicate, moss-like plants.

Heaven's Spear
Heaven's Spear
Angels have often been the subjects of art. For me, it’s creating angels that are warriors. When I made this, I could almost hear the butt of her staff tapping with a deep and powerful sound against the ground below. Of all the angels I have made, she will always be my favorite.

Keeper of the Winds
Keeper of the Winds
Now and then I like to delve into the concepts of magic. This was the beginning of a series on elementals, but she’s my favorite image of the series. I loved the way the lighting turned out in this image. And the overall feeling and sense of flow it has.
Lady of the Lake
Lady of the Lake
With this image, I wanted to focus entirely on the legendary lady of the lake. There are no woodlands here, no grass, nothing of the natural surroundings one might expect to see. The entire image is dominated by cold, pale shades of blue representing the waters. And the lady herself is pale with nearly white hair and blue eyes reflected in the mirror-like still water below.
Legend
Legend
Here I returned to the Arthurian legends, an image featuring the famous sword in the stone. But I wanted to go with something romantic and softer as opposed to what might really have been. So I set the stone in a field of flowers, partially covering the stone itself with those same flowers.
Never
Never
Defiant. That was uppermost in my mid when I made this image. It’s really a fantasy version of the fierce Celtic queen, Boudica. With my love of creating images of ancient warriors, it was inevitable that I would get around to her.
Once
Once
This particular image was my first complex image created in Vue. It’s not as good as it could be, but I felt like I had accomplished something and did not wish to demean my efforts by going back and reworking it. But someday, when I have the time, I might just do that.
Once and Forever
Once and Forever
This was made for a contest about environments. I chose a fantasy setting, delving into the idea that this might be the ruins of Camelot. Despite the fact that I did not place in the contest, I still love the image. I love the way the light plays off of grasses on the hills. I was really happy with the overall mood of the image.
Reflections of Autumn
Reflections of Autumn
This was another image I created for a contest, this time about autumn. Realism is not really my thing and I still feel the image had more of a painterly feel to it than anything. But I was happy with the end result and it did take first place. Considering the quality of the other entries, I was surprised and a bit humbled by placing first.

Remembering the Brave
Remembering the Brave
I created this as a silent nod to all the men and women who have served over the years, and especially to those whose lives were lost. To my father, who fought his own brave battle with the cancer that took his life. It was my way to honor brave souls.

The Falconer
The Falconer
This image was a nod to high fantasy art. I love raptors despite not using them all that often in my images. During the day I frequently hear their cries while they are hunting overhead. I wanted to have a nice contrast with the woman and her bird against the snowy mountain top where they hunt.

The Journey
The Journey
A bit of a dive back into Arthurian legend times here. When I made this, I was thinking about “The Lady of Shallot”. It’s one of those sad, romantic tales from long ago. In this version, she’s arriving at the island where she will spend time in the tower, until she sees Lancelot. I might do another version of the lady one of these days.
The Last Dragon
The Last Dragon
One of my few dragon images. What if there were no more dragons save for this last one? I can imagine the sound of his lonely cry carried across a foggy sunset. How sad it would be, but of course there are no dragons. Or are there…?
The Valley in Winter
The Valley in Winter
I love doing seasonal images of fall and winter. This one was such a pleasure to create. I really wanted to bring across the feeling of the cold snow, the remote cabin. The partially frozen pond is where it began and I built up from there.
Valiant
Valiant
With this particular image part of my inspiration was “Game of Thrones” and part of it was how lonely and hard such a posting would be. This courageous woman is in the middle of this remote wilderness with only the ruins, her sword and her armor for protection. There is no way of knowing for certain what dangers lurk in that vast mountain region.
